How to write a school AI policy in one week

Dr. Imoleayomide Ajayi30 June 20268 min read

A practical, five-step route from blank page to governor-ready policy, with the sections leaders forget.

Why this matters now

Children encounter generative AI long before anyone formally teaches them about it. That means the first framing they receive usually comes from a friend, an app or a video — not from a teacher or parent. Getting in early with an honest, age-appropriate explanation is the single highest-leverage thing an adult can do.

What we do in the classroom

We start from an example the learners already recognise, then work backwards to the data, the training process and the failure modes. Every activity ends with the same three questions: what did the model actually do, what could it have got wrong, and who is accountable for the result?

  • Ground each concept in a concrete, observable example.
  • Make the model's mistakes visible on purpose, then discuss them.
  • Ask learners to explain their project without using the word "magic".

Taking it further

Our free resource library includes the lesson plans and printable activities behind this article, and our workshops deliver the whole sequence with your learners.
